Music for Hammers and Sticks
Music for Hammers and Sticks began in the spring of 2002 when I was interested in programming music for piano and percussion. Since the piano is essentially a percussion instrument, I have always been interested in exploring those sounds and expanding the repertoire to include more pieces for this combination of instruments.
I commissioned composers Alvin Singleton, Alex Shapiro, Belinda Reynolds and Zhou Long to write pieces for me that explored this world of sound. Composers Steve Mackey and Joseph Harchanko also contributed percussion solo pieces to the project. The pieces were premiered at Weill Recital Hall in 2004 and recorded the following summer: Music for Hammers and Sticks (innova 630)
